It is clear that L1 is learned in a different context and in a different way in comparison with L2.
There are three main difference between them such as age, ways of learning, and the context.
Learning | L1 | L2 |
Age | - It begins when learners are babies and during the first years of life until their adolescence. It happens with language and language skills like writing - Cognitive skills and language are developed at the same time. - There is a need to use the language if they want to communicate. | - It happens when learners begins their studies. It could be in school, high school or in adulthood (If they start or continue with their studies). - Cognitive skills: Children continue developing it. Adolescence, the learning of the foreign language is not mature. They have the cognitive skill developed. Adulthood, They portray the maturity with the language learning. |
Context and ways of learning | - Learners are surrounded by the language all the time and in this part acquisition occurs. - It is easy to learn because they are exposed to the language all the time. - They learn through chunks - They learn the language through constant interaction with their parents and close people. - It is related to affection and they are free to use the language. | - Learners use the language only in class. They have only one guide, the teacher. - They learn based on structure and word by word. - Students learn the L2 with a professional in the pedagogical area, who is prepared to manage the learning process. - It is controlled and they could feel more pressure. It is formal. |
