KEY CONCEPTS
There are six important factors that influence learner's motivation in a classroom:
- To have the reasons cleared: You must know why you want to learn a second language. For example, it could help you to get a better job, to study or to work abroad, and to communicate with people from other countries, etc.
- Interests in the target language culture: It means that you not only want to learn a language, but also the way people live, their culture, festivities, and more. There could be some people that would like to learn English and they study their traditions, customs by watching American Tv programs. Another example is about other people that are good at understanding Japanese language, so they study how japanese live throughout reading mangas or watching anime. In other words, it is a mix between learning a language and foreigners' life style.
- Good at learning a language: The more you understand a language, the more you feel motivated to continue learning and achieve goals. Furthermore, there are three important aspects to consider. The first one is confidence. It is how each person feels to perform an activity, if you are happy and willing to participate in class you will become a successful student. The second aspect is learner autonomy/independence, it is true that teachers and partnerares' help is essential in class, but you must effort on your own doing tasks and study. Remember, teachers are only a guide for you. The last one is achievement or goals that you have fulfilled. It makes you to continue doing your best.
- Encourage: As I mentioned before teachers and partners are important for the development of the class. Also, taking a class that highly requires mastering another language, encourage people to learn a second language.
- Communication: It is the main need for people when they learn another language. They feel motivated when they are able to speak with others, they understand what others say and they produce the language.
- Classroom activities: It is the last factor that influence learner's motivation because activities, tasks and games that are applied in the class push them to learn. Teachers should teach what they want to transmit to others using a topic that are interest for learners.
