According to Messel (2003), a learner need is the space between a knowledge that a learner already has and the knowledge that he/she wants to acquire. Every teacher knows that all of their students are different and unique between them. Learner needs are produced due to motivation, learning styles, expectations, and some other aspects.
Kind of needs | Examples |
Personal Needs | Security, challenge, support, praise, movement, goals, learning expectations. |
Learning Needs | Specific ways of learnings, specific target language, specific language subskills, etc. |
Professional Needs | Specific subskills, specific vocabulary and grammar, specific functions, specific text types. |
For a teacher, It is important to know how to address students' needs. The first way to help learners overcome those difficulties is by choosing materials, approaches, and activities. Furthermore, the teachers have to take into account students' interactions and learning styles.
